About the Teacher:
 Hello and welcome to a new school year!  My name is Cindy Driskill and I will be your child's teacher this year.  I have been at St. Rose for fourteen  years, and have been teaching for the Catholic School system for the past 30 years.  I'm looking forward to working with you and your child this coming year. This summer my daughter Katie who graduated from St. Rose in 2010 got married! I'm now a proud mom of a son. Very special summer for me, and I hope you all had a great summer as well.  I'm looking forward to working with all of you this coming year.

Dear Parent(s),
    Last week before our Spring Break!!!!  The children did an awesome job presenting their projects at St. Catherine's!!!!  the follow is what we will cover this coming week.

Spelling:  The following words come from a review section. The words are: bore, sir, bog, waste, dare, horses, purse, paw, steel, stair, claw, snore, blur, aware, steal.

Math:  We will be working more with our multiplication tables this week.  Please have your children review their flash cards nightly.  This week we will be solving for the unknown (variable) , and reviewing for our next math test.  The test will be on Wednesday.

English:  This week we will be working with more quotations marks.  the children come up to me often while reading their A>R> books and pointing them out.  We are also at the end of this chapter as well.  The children will be taking a test over Unit 5 on Thursday.

Reading: We are beginning a story this week called, Technology Wins the Game.  The vocabulary words for this week are :contribute, athletes, improve, power, process, flexible, fraction, compete.  This story is a factual story about technology has made playing sports much better. Some of the skills that go with this story are vowel diphthongs oi, oy.. We will also be reviewing singular and plural nouns.

Science:  Not that our projects are complete we can get back into science. We are beginning our chapter on What is Work?  The children will learn about force, friction, and energy is.

Religion 2 : We will be preparing for the Sacrament of the Holy Communion for the next few weeks.

Religion 3: We will be discussing the different parts of the mass this week. The children will also be going to the Mission Carnival, and the Stations of the Cross.

Dear Parent(s),
   Welcome to a new season??? That's right, this Wednesday we begin the season of Lent.  The children will celebrate the beginning of Lent by going to mass on Ash Wednesday.  During this lent we need to think of all the ways we can better ourselves through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Parents, special note that all Black History Projects are due on Wednesday.  The children will be walking over to St. Catherine's on Friday to present their projects to our special friends who live there. Below are the topics we will be covering this week.

Religion 2: This week we will start the week discussing what we can do to make the season of Lent a special time. We are also going to start preparing ourselves to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of Eucharist. This is something now we will studying for the next few weeks.

Religion 3: We will be preparing our selves for the Lenten Season.  Talking about ways we can grow for the next 40 days.  We will also be learning how God calls all of us to be holy.

Spelling: Unit 22 words follow the r- controlled vowel sound as well as last week.  There are many homophones so I have warned the children that it is important that we pay special attention to what the word also means. The words are: pear, pair, hare, barefoot, fare, their, hair, bare, nowhere, there, software, fair, where, hardware.

Social Studies: The children will start presenting their projects on Wednesday.  Make sure they have everything they need to present their work. ( Note cards, any props, or clothing items).

Math: The children will be working by multiplying by 5's , and multiplying by nine this week. The children have been making flashcards and are encouraged to use those cards to review their facts.

English: This week we will be capitalizing other types of Proper Nouns. We will also be learning how to abbreviate and write book titles correctly.

Reading: The children will be taking their reading test over the vocabulary and comprehension  Monday over the story the Kamishibai Man. The rest tof the week we will be reading the story Young Thomas Edison. The vocabulary words for this story are: invention, experiment, laboratory, genius, gadget, electric, signal, occasional.  Some of the skills that go along with this story are words that au, aw, al, and o sounds. We will also be reviewing singular and plural nouns.

Dear Parent(s),
   Such a busy week with so many different things going on.  The children had a wonderful time seeing Owen and Mzee at the Civic Center today.  The children have begun their research on their Famous African American in history.  Remember all final projects are due by February 26.  St. Catherine's Center has already called to have the children give their presentations.  The children will be walking next door on Friday, February 28th from 9:00 to 10:00 to present to our special friends next door. This coming Monday, the children will be heading to St. Ferdinand to be part of our ASA Group Activities. Thank you for getting your permission slips in so quickly! Below are the things that will be covered this coming week. 

Religion 2: This week will be covering the seven sacraments.  Those students who will be receiving First Communion, a letter went home in your child's Friday Folder. 

Religion 3: This week we will be learning how our church cares for others.  February 19th will be our classes turn for mass.  If your child will be reading at that mass they will receive a copy of the reading this coming week.  As of course I will make sure they are ready to read at mass that day.

Math:  We are working on our review section for chapter 4.  The children were asked to bring their books home as well to review the types of problems that will be covered on the test.

English:  As things have a tendency to fall, the children will also be having a English test this coming week. That test will cover Adjectives and Adverbs.  We will be reviewing this week and the test will be on Thursday.

Reading : We are starting a new story called, Kamishibai Man. This a true story about an older man and his wanting to keep alive the art of story telling. The vocabulary words for this story are: familiar, blurry, vacant, jerky, applause, blasted, rude, rickety. The skills in this story are the vowel diphthong ow, and ou.

Spelling: This weeks words follow the r- controlled vowel. The words are: story, wore, north, board, form, corner, warm, score, morning, forget, before, storm, tore, order, war.

The children will also be given an opportunity to work on their projects in class. Again if you need to see an example of some former students work, please feel free to stop by the class and see an example.

This Friday the children will be having their Valentine's Party.  If they choose to bring in valentine' s all they need to do is sign their names on the back of them.  I told them it was not mandatory; however, if they bring them in they will need to have one for every child.  Thank you again to all of our wonderful parents who have stepped up to the plate to host another party for our kiddos.

Dear Parent(s),
   Such an exciting week we just had!!!  The children seemed to enjoy all the special days that were planned for Catholic Schools Week!!! Next week we will be back to a normal week.  Below are the topics we will be covering:

Spelling: The children will be taking their spelling test on Monday.  This weeks words will follow  the aw, o sound.  The words aredraw, cost, dawn, across, belong, cross, soft, crawl, song, boss, straw, lawn, raw, lost, law.

Math: The children will be representing division through subtraction. We will also be reviewing this week, and will be taking our Chapter 4 test on Friday.

Reading: We are finishing up our story Harvest Birds this early part of the week. On Thursday we will be taking our test over the story and the vocabulary words.  I will have them bring their books home with them so they can read the story to you. The phonics section over the story will be on Friday.

English: This week we will be doing more work with adverbs.  Monday they will see that adverbs also tell us when and where. They will also learn when to use the words to, too or two.  We will also be reviewing since we are at the end of the chapter.  The test over Unit 4 will be either next Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week.

Religion 3: This week we will be talking about how our Parish is Our Home and all the people who help to make our parish functioning.

Religion 2: This week we will learning about God's Love for Us! We will be learning about what it means to worship, what faith is. 

Parents  the children will be starting a project for Black History Month with me.  Some of this project will have to be done at home.  Please look for a letter by the middle of this week.

Dear Parent(s),
    Welcome to Catholic Schools Week!  There are many activities scheduled for this coming week.  I know the newsletter from Mrs. McKay also has all the information you need.  I will highlight the important events that are happening this week. Monday is Parent Appreciation Day.  The children will be something special for you. Tuesday is Student Appreciation Day.  I know a link was sent about skate night for all families that were interested. That day the children will be doing a lot of fun activities.  More importantly, they will not have homework that night.  That day the children is also scheduled to be Wacky Tacky Day.  This means that they can dress crazily ( mismatched socks, shoes, etc..) No hair coloring or open- toed shoes are allowed! Wednesday is Community Appreciation Day.  We will be writing to a person in our community thanking them for what they do for us. Thursday is Sports Day.  The children can dress in their favorite teams shirts etc..  Dr. Gilligan has asked that no hats be worn. They will also be participating in an activity sponsored by our Student Council.  Friday is Spirit Day.  All Saints Academy uniforms whether it be sports gear etc.  The children will watch a spelling bee, a volleyball game against the 8th grade and 7th grade, and a volley ball game against the teachers'/ parents and the 8th grade.  That day is also a half day.  If your child will be attending aftercare they will need to bring a lunch. Below are the following things we will be covering this week:

Spelling:  Due to last weeks weather the children will be having their spelling test on Monday.  The words for this week come from a review unit.  The following words are blush, charm, cage, wren, await, gem, stung, siren, pitch, brace, stack, flood, aside, patch, rage.  The test over these words won't be until Monday, February 3rd. hopefully we can get ourselves back on track.

Math: The children will be working on more multiplication facts.  I'm having them create their own flash cards. Please have them review this nightly.  This week they will get a glimpse of division by sharing.  They will also see how to do division by repeated subtraction.

English:  We will be learning what an adverb is this week.  They will answer the question of how, when and where. 

Reading:  The children did a wonderful job on their puppet shows.  They were able to depict different folktales to our younger children. This week we will be returning back to our readers and review the story Harvest Birds.  Those vocabulary words again were serious, patch, borrow, advice, ashamed, borders, separate, and harvest.  This week we will be covering commas in an address and reviewing the silent letters wr, and kn.

Religion 3:  We will begin this week with a prayer service to kick off our Catholic Week's activities.  Dr. Gilligan will be visiting the children on Tuesday.  He loves to come to each classroom and teach a lesson.  We will be starting our 11th chapter The Parish is our Home. In this chapter we will learn what a parish is, who a pastor and deacon is, and what makes them different. 

Religion 2 We are beginning our 3rd chapter We Celebrate God's Love.  We will be talking about what is a parish. Who are Catholics? What does the word faith and worship mean.

Science:  We are moving into Work and Machines.  They will learn what the differences are between a simple and a complex machine.  Some important words in this chapter are force, gravity, friction, and work.I will have them create something that has a fulcrum to raise a load later in this chapter.

Dear Parent(s),
    Hello parents hopefully you are settling back into the routine of the second part of our school year!  This coming Friday is a noon dismissal, if your child will be attending aftercare they will need to have a lunch and a drink with them.  The following are the topics we will be covering this coming week.

Spelling : This weeks words follow the schwa sound.  The following words are the words we will be using this week. afraid, around, upon, never, open, animal, ever, about, again, another, couple, awake, over, asleep, above.

Math:  This week we will be representing numbers on a number line, representing multiplication using an array, and using the commutative property with multiplication.

English:  We are beginning a new chapter.  We will be covering What is an Adjective? We will be learning when we use A, An or The. We will also be comparing adjectives.

Reading:  This week we will be working with Folk Tales.  The children will be putting on short folk tale puppet shows for our younger students.  We are also skill in the story Harvest Birds. The children will be taking their test on the story on Thursday.

Religion 3: This week we will be seeing how Jesus teaches us to follow him.  We will also be learning about the different types of prayers.

Religion 2: This week we will be learning how the Holy Spirit plays an important role in our daily lives. We will also be learning how we can celebrate God's Love. We will learn what parishes are, what it means to worship and to have faith.

Dear Parent(s),
    Dear Parents!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a relaxing and blessed New Year!  Can't believe it is now 2020, and that we are now in our third quarter.  A special thanks again to all of our wonderful parents who came up to work our Christmas party.  The children had a wonderful time.  Below are the topics we are covering this week.

Religion 2: The Christmas season and how we celebrate God's Love is the focal point of this weeks lessons.

Religion 3: We are covering the Christmas season and what Ordinary Time is.  By far not ordinary at all.  Most of the wonderful works that Jesus did occurred during Ordinary Time. 

Math: This week we are moving into representing multiplication as repeating addition, learning how to represent multiplication on a number line and using an array.  The children will also begin to make their own flash cards.

Spelling:  The children have had the new words before the Christmas break.  These words are digraphs and blends.  The words are: shook, flash, speech, think, strong, cloth, brook, stitch, string, scratch, fresh, spring, switch, stretch, splash.

English:  We will be having a test over chapter three on Friday.  This week we will be preparing for the test.

Reading:  This week we are starting a new story called Harvest Birds.  This story is a folktale about a man who gets advice from a bird.  The vocabulary words are: serious, patch, borrow, advice, ashamed, borders, separate, harvest. The skills that go along with this story are silent letters kn, wr. We will also be learning more about the use of commas.

Science: We will finally be able to get back to the planets and their moons.

Dear Parent(s),
    Thanks for all the wonderful families that showed up for our Christmas concert!!!  The children did an outstanding job!!! Special thanks to Mrs. Arnold who worked with all the children to help make our Christmas Season just a little brighter. Please remember that Friday is our last day before the Christmas break.  The children get out at noon and there is no aftercare that day.  Special shout out to our parents who are preparing for our Christmas party on Friday.  We are blessed to have such wonderful parents who take time to do so many special things for our children. The following our the topics we will be covering this coming week:

Religion 2 and 3 :  We will be doing various activities preparing for Christmas.

English:  We are at the end of a chapter and I would hate to have the children to have to take the test weeks after the material is so fresh in their heads, so we will take our test over Chapter 3 on Wednesday or Thursday.  The children were encouraged to bring their books home this weekend to review the materials.

Math:  We will be making multiplication flashcards this week.  We are starting our chapter where the children have to represent multiplication as repeated addition. The children will also learn how to represent multiplication as an array.

Reading:  This week we will be reading classic Christmas Stories.  We will begin our new story after the Christmas break.

Science:  We will be learning about the planets in our Solar System.  Hopefully, we will get time to make our mobiles.

Spelling:  The children have written their new words in their planners for January 6, 2020. Doesn't that look strange!!!  The words we will be using when we return from our Christmas break are: shook, flash, speech, think, strong, cloth, brook, stitch, string, scratch, fresh, spring, switch, stretch, splash.

Just a few updates to our class rooster.  We are losing Kenny Caston as of the Christmas break.  His family has been commuting from St. Charles this pass semester.  I want to wish Kenny the very best at his new school.  We will be adding a new student on Monday.  Her name is Takorie Willis.  I have meet her and she will be a wonderful addition to our classroom.
